Luminescence Dosimetry Group (Lumidosi)

Luminescence is the emission of light under external influence. The fundamental question is to evaluate which natural (Brazilian minerals) and synthetic materials are luminescent and if they can be used as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation detectors (dosimetry).

Research

Brazilian soil is rich in minerals. Many of them have been investigated from the point of view of Geology / Mineralogy, however, for most of them the physical properties have not been studied. One of the most intriguing properties of some minerals is luminescence, a process of that gives off light without generating heat. In addition, some minerals, when previously exposed to ionizing radiation, can exhibit luminescence upon thermal or optical stimulus. Due to these luminescent properties, these minerals are of interest in the field of dosimetry.

Based on the results with minerals, the group is also working on the synthesis of new low-cost materials that optimize luminescent properties with a focus on dosimetry.
