The Research Laboratory RTI – FAPESP Professor William Portilho de Paiva was inaugurated at the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP), Campus São Paulo. Funding for the investment comes from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The laboratory's name is a tribute to Professor William Portilho de Paiva, who was a professor and research coordinator at the IFSP, at the Salto Campus, and who died in June this year as a result of complications from Covid-19.

The objective is to encourage research within the IFSP, motivating the Institution's researchers and attracting new researchers, whether they are professors, scientific initiation students, master's and even, in the future, doctoral students. With this support in infrastructure, the laboratory will support research groups that have relations with FAPESP, as well as promoting the generation of new research groups.

According to Prof. Neilo Trindade, responsible for the new laboratory, the IFSP has a significant number of scientific publications, considering that it is an institution with little more than ten years in terms of research. However, the researcher points out that an obstacle to the efficiency of research at the IFSP is that most of this production is carried out using infrastructure from other institutions, such as USP, UNESP, Unicamp and UFSCar, for example.

According to Prof. Neilo Trindade, with investments in equipment such as the recently opened laboratory, the IFSP gains some autonomy in research, increasing the number of projects at all levels of education.
